A few days after I arrived home from Haiti the fan on my little laptop started making this buzzing sound. Sure enough a couple days later the computer wouldn’t start and a message appeared on the screen, ”fan error”. Come to find out one of the cooling fans had pulled in so much dust in Haiti it just quit turning.
This happens often at Radio Lumière and underlines just one of the many obstacles to keeping technology running in Haiti. Another is the chronic blackouts. Right now Pat and I are helping the accounting team rebuild their accounting system. They lost many months worth of figures to one of the frequent computer crashes when the power goes off. (I know, “Use a UPS.” But the batteries wear out in those too!)
Sometimes we wonder if it is worth it. Are radio and TV a sensible way to do ministry in Haiti? Then we get a note on our web site from a listener like this:
I greet you with all my heart, and I thank God for the staff of Radio Lumière that he puts at our disposition to aid us in prayer, in giving advice, etc. I thank you. Know that your work is not in vain for the Savior.
Be encouraged. Radio Lumière is making a difference.

I’m in the process of changing the main purpose of this blog to center it on the ministry of Radio Lumière in Haiti. But I will continue to post some of my own musings and my journey as well.
This morning when I was having my devotions and reading in Jeremiah I ran into some facts that really hit me and that I thought would be good to pass on. I was reading about Hezekiah the last king of Judah who finally was killed when Jerusalem was destroyed and burnt by Nebuchadnezzar. Started reading back in Kings and Chronicles to get the history and background. Found out that H. was one of the sons of Josiah! And Josiah was a righteous king and a great reformer. He brought revival to Judah and led the people back to serving God. Three of his sons ruled after him at various times, and all three were wicked and ‘did evil’. Where did Josiah miss it? And what could have happened if he had passed the faith on to his sons? Might things have been different and Judah spared? True Josiah died at the early age of 41 in an ill advised battle against Egypt. But his son who took over was already 23 by then and should have learned from his father.
Maybe part of the problem was that Josiah began to feel invincible as he matured and that he didn’t need God or to listen to His word. He was warned by God through the king of Egypt that this wasn’t his fight and he should desist but went into battle anyway. Maybe it was this disdain that influenced his sons more than his Godliness?
It certainly makes you think about parenting. What am I passing on to my kids, and grandkids?

I have a big decision to make. I need to fly to Haiti on February 10. We have teams scheduled to start arriving on the 12th to start rebuilding homes.
Still no word this morning as to what the government is going to do about the political crisis, and no indication what the streets will be like in early February. What confusion, only heightened by the sudden reappearance of Baby Doc on the scene! Oh Lord, how long? When will Haiti ever really get a government that is “by the people and for the people”?
My dilemma this morning is, do I chance it and buy airline tickets?

That is the question! I guess it’s been not to blog for over a year.
I can blame that largely on the Haitian earthquake of January 12, 2010. Five trips to Haiti along with my other responsibilities has kept me pretty busy!
Haiti is still first on my list today. But WGM has now assigned us to ministry with Radio Lumière full time. So I will now have only one focus, and maybe a little more time.
More about that later. Check out our latest prayer update which I just posted.

Deficits, Deficits!
|
|
Lately in my devotions I’ve been reading the book of Joshua. There are some amazing stories. God encourages Joshua over and over again to be strong and courageous. Then God acts on behalf of His people. Logistically there was no way this little band of marauders should have been able to conquer the people of the land of Canaan. But Joshua 1:9,10
“The LORD has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. One of you routs a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as he promised.”
Many of our missionaries who are currently on Homeland Ministry Assignment need to be reminded of these odds. Several face large deficit ministry accounts and lots of new support to raise. Humanly speaking it’s impossible, especially in tough times. BUT GOD….!
As I may have told you Pat and I are among them. We start HMA next month with a mountain of $2500 a month to raise. We need reminded that 2 is 2000 in God’s army!
